COUNTY COUNCIL ELECTION CAMPAIGN

Campaign information for the County Council elections on 4th June 2009 is on this website: www.sixtofix.co.uk.

Council Tax increase only 1.5%

Liberal Democrat run Three Rivers District Council's component of the Council Tax for 2009/10 will rise by only 1.5%.

The below inflation increase is expected to be the third lowest of the ten district councils in Hertfordshire and means that the District Council's council tax charge is on a par with that charged in 2006/07. Over the past five years, the District Council's bill has increased by only 4%, the lowest for any shire, district or borough council in England.

The District Council's element of the Council Tax bill will equate to an average of £156.52 for a Band D property, which is a rise of £2.31.

The rise, coupled with efficiency savings of over £600,000 in the coming year, will enable current service levels to continue and to expand in key areas.

Councillor Matthew Bedford, Portfolio Holder for Resources and Deputy Leader of the District Council, said: "We know that many residents will find the Council Tax a financial burden, so we are delighted to be able to propose such a low increase. By making further savings the Council has managed to keep its component of the Council Tax rise to an absolute minimum, while increasing service provision in key areas, which we know is very important to residents. Local householders will see an increase of less than five pence per week for the Three Rivers component of their Council Tax bill."

Council Leader Ann Shaw said: "Significant efficiency savings have been found and by employing sound financial management we can protect the Council's financial future, invest in key value-for-money services and keep the tax increase low."

The budget provides for the maintenance of existing services and a range of new initiatives for the coming year, including investment in local woodlands and conservation areas, play areas and allotments and the expansion of the District Council's highly successful recycling scheme.
